Urban Programs

Before Kyanna set foot on the court, she was quiet and shy. Once she joined Special Olympics, she found her voice.

Today she isn’t hesitant to try a new sport, although she admits bowling is her favorite. Kyanna has recruited her brother and sister to join her Unified softball team, the Richmond Eagles, and she’s a Global Messenger who helps share - in her own voice - the power of Special Olympics.

We believe it is necessary to provide extra support to urban centers like the City of Richmond in order to reach potential new Special Olympics athletes like Kyanna.

“Special Olympics has made me feel better about myself. It’s given me a chance to meet new people. It’s helped me to be fearless in the real world” - Keyanna, Urban Programs athlete

Recent studies confirm that in urban centers, there exists:

  • A higher number of children with intellectual disabilities
  • A higher number of single parent households requesting services for children with special needs, including intellectual disabilities
  • A lower number of community volunteers to support programs for children and adults with special needs
  • Few, if any, sporting opportunities offered through Richmond Public Schools and Richmond Parks & Recreation.

In collaboration with Richmond Public Schools and Richmond Residential Services, we fill this void by providing programs in seasonal sports, life skills, and social activities for eligible children and adults.

Our Urban Programs are made possible thanks to generous donations from sponsors and partners like Robins Foundation, George J. & Effie L. Seay Foundation, Walmart Foundation, U-Turn, Communities in Schools of Richmond, Richmond Residential Services and Richmond Public Schools.
