Swimmers compete under competition rules in a series of time trials which are used to determine the division individual swimmers will compete in at 2027 Potomac Region Swim Meet. At Special Olympics competitions, all athletes are given an equal chance to participate, perform and be recognized for doing their best by their teammates, family, and fans. This unique process called "divisioning" is designed to ensure athletes are grouped by age, gender and ability – giving everyone a reasonable chance to win. Divisioning makes Special Olympics competitions fair, empowering and exciting.
