Triathlon is a three-sport athletic competition involving swimming, cycling, and running. As with all Special Olympics sports, triathlon offers athletes the opportunity to learn through skill development and competitive settings and to be involved in large social settings. Triathlon races vary in distance. Special Olympics will offer the Sprint Distance triathlon: 750 meter (.47 mile) swim, 20 kilometer (12 mile) bike, 5 kilometer (3.1 mile) run. An athlete’s overall time for the race includes each of the three stages and the time spent in transition between the swim and bike and between the bike and run.
