National Volunteer Week celebrating: Nancy Beckman

Nancy Beckman’s first experience with Special Olympics Virginia was as volleyball referee at Tidewater Volleyball Association during Fall Championships 10 years ago. During that event, Nancy noticed the athletes displayed the best sportsmanship she’d ever seen. She was so moved by the players’ interactions that she reached out to her daughter, a volleyball coach, and encouraged her to bring her players out so they could see how athletes truly should support each other on and off the court.

When Nancy began working at GEICO and realized they were one of our partners, she felt it only made sense to jump right in. She now works closely with Micah Bosch and Alexis Coleman to put on the Opening Ceremony and Victory Dance at Fall Championships in Virginia Beach. This is no small job and these three exceptional volunteers divide and conquer to make each year’s event better than the last.

In the last 10 years Nancy has continued to grow her involvement by also organizing a Polar Plunge team. It’s because of volunteers like Nancy and her GEICO team that we can continue to provide awesome experiences for the people of Virginia. Thank you for being part of #OneTeam15!

We’re celebrating Nancy and all our incredible volunteers this week, thanks to our friends at United Airlines! Each day, we'll select one volunteer who connects with us on social media to win a pair of roundtrip airline tickets.

To be entered to win, follow us on Facebook, Twitter and/or Instagram, and comment on one of our daily volunteer stories, or share your own. Be sure to include #OneTeam15 to help us track your comments. Certain restrictions apply; no purchase necessary.
