Your Guide to The 2019 Summer Games

Weather Update 6/7 at 3 pm:

  • All Friday outdoor track events canceled except for running & standing long jump. They will not be rescheduled. 
  • Friday and Saturday softball CANCELED because of weather.
  • Swimming and bowling ON as scheduled.
  • All tennis play INSIDE at Bolling Field House.
  • The Torch Run Final Leg is still on as planned. 

Whether you show us your best cannonball at Solar Plunge, lace up your running shoes and carry the Flame of Hope alongside local law enforcement into Friday’s Opening Ceremony at the University of Richmond’s Robins Center or cheer for 1500+ athletes going for gold, it’s two days of inspiration and fun not to be missed!

Opening Ceremony

We’re excited to be back inside at Robins Center for Opening Ceremony! We have some amazing plans for Opening Ceremony: we’ll light the Olympic Cauldron, showcase some of Richmond’s top talent and welcome our Law Enforcement Torch Run officers home from their 1900+ mile journey across the Commonwealth. Get ready to be inspired!

We will also feature American Idol finalist and Midlothian native Shayy, who will perform on stage LIVE!

Festivities begin inside the Robins Center at 7:45PM.

Can’t make it? You can still get in on the action thanks to the University of Richmond, who’ll be live streaming Friday’s Opening Ceremony. Tune in to https://youtu.be/kspa7A3e2Rg Friday, June 7 from 7:45 to 9 pm.  

Competition

Summer Games, presented by Hardee’s, Sheetz, the University of Richmond, NBC Channel 12, Virginia Knights of Columbus, the Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics Virginia, K95, 103.7 Play, 96.5 Classic Rock, 100.9 Jack FM, G 104.3 and Sports 106.1, is the largest state-level competitions offered by Special Olympics Virginia.Competitions will be held at various locations around the city Saturday, June 8, beginning at 8 am:

Track & field & wheelchair athletics begin at 8 am at St. Christopher’s School, 711 St Christopher's Rd.

Softball commences at 9 am at the Glen Allen Softball Complex, 2175 Mountain Road. UPDATE: FRIDAY EVENTS CANCELED BECAUSE OF RAIN. 

Softball skills and tennis start at 9 am at St. Christopher’s School, 711 St Christopher's Rd (Siegel Baseball Field – softball skills; Parrish Outdoor Tennis Complex – tennis match play; Bolling Field House – tennis skills). UPDATE: ALL TENNIS PLAY INSIDE FRIDAY AT BOLLING FIELD HOUSE. 

Swimming begins at 9 am at the Collegiate School Aquatics Center, 5050 Ridgedale Parkway.

Bowlers hit the lanes at 9:15 am at Bowl America Short Pump, 4400 Pouncey Tract Road.

Healthy Athletes begins at 11 am at St. Christopher’s School, 711 St. Christopher’s Road – Kemper, second floor.

Olympic Town begins at 9:30 am at St. Christopher’s School’s East Field – festivities are free and open to all!

Get Involved

  1. Go for COLD while our athletes go for gold at SOLAR PLUNGE, Saturday, June 8 during Summer Games! Support Virginia’s inspiring athletes by making a splash with 150+ brrrrave fans, including Nutzy from the Flying Squirrels, Kickeroo from the Richmond Kickers and WebstUR, the University of Richmond mascot. Plunges will take place from 6:30 to 8 pm outside Robins Center (near the ticket entrance). Start a team today at polarplunge.com/richmond.
  2. FINAL MILE: We’ve invited the community to join 100+ law enforcement officers and run the Flame of Hope into University of Richmond’s Robins Center as we light the Olympic Cauldron! The Opening Ceremony begins at 7:45 pm June 7. Join them or make a donation to support the Torch Run at specialolympicsva.org/makeasplash.
  3. VOLUNTEER OR CHEER: We’re still in need of 375 volunteers to help with timing to staging to awards. Visit specialolympicsva.org/volunteer/be-a-volunteer.
