2025 Basketball Championships: A Weekend of Competition and Celebration

A Weekend of Competition, Community, and Champions on the Court at the 2025 Basketball Championships

This past weekend, Henrico Sports & Events Center was filled with energy as more than 900 athletes from 114 teams took the court for the 2025 Special Olympics Virginia Basketball Championships. The tournament, now in its second year at this venue, featured two full days of competition, with athletes showcasing their skills in individual skills challenges, half-court, and full-court games.

The Pinnacle of the Basketball Season

“This is the pinnacle of our basketball season,” said David Thomason, President of Special Olympics Virginia. “Everybody is celebrating in all the ways that we can. We encourage the public to come out and watch these athletes play. We have full court, half court, and skills—it's a wonderful way to celebrate what our athletes have done with this sport.”

Supported by 150+ coaches and 200+ volunteers, athletes displayed teamwork, determination, and sportsmanship throughout the weekend, all competing for a chance to take home gold medals.

A Night to Remember: The Opening Ceremony

Saturday night’s Opening Ceremony brought athletes, coaches, families, and supporters together for an exciting start to the championships. The Henrico High School Warrior Marching Band and dancers provided entertainment before CBS 6’s Jon Burkett and Special Olympics Global Messenger Garvin Rodrique took the stage as co-emcees.

The highlight of the night was the lighting of the cauldron by Special Olympics athlete Lily Kuhn, officially marking the start of the championships.

Championship Sunday and Closing Moments

The competition continued into Sunday, with medal rounds determining this year’s champions. Each game reflected the dedication of the athletes and the impact of inclusion in sports.

A heartfelt thank you to all the athletes, coaches, families, volunteers, and supporters who made this weekend possible. The 2025 Basketball Championships were more than just a tournament—they were a celebration of the power of sport.

We’ll see you on the court next year!
