Hey everyone! I’m Alex Burns, and today I’m reviewing the 2023 film Champions
and let me tell you, I’ve got some thoughts! As a Special Olympics athlete with autism and Tourette’s Syndrome, I’m pretty well-qualified to review this one.
So, here’s the scoop: Marcus, played by Woody Harrelson, gets into trouble with the law and ends up coaching the 'Friends'—a Special Olympics basketball team. He learns that they—and he—can achieve more than anyone ever thought possible.
I enjoyed this film. As a fellow member of the disability community, this film really spoke to me regarding the important message of not underestimating people with disabilities and to encourage the disability community to not let their limitations hold them back from achieving greatness.
The cast playing the 'Friends' did a phenomenal job portraying both inspirational and real characters from the disability community, not shying away from showing their flaws.
I also give major kudos for this film being a great example of a feel-good movie. There are good heartwarming moments which to me is a breath of fresh air because I feel like certain films of recent years miss the mark on that, which is to say, having likable characters.
I thought it was really cool to see the Special Olympics banner they included when the team arrives at the hotel. It features the iconic slogan: 'Let me win, but if I cannot win, let me be brave in the attempt.' That’s a nice touch.
Now, I’ve got to be honest—some of the humor was a bit...let’s just say it’s a Farrelly Brothers film, so expect some gross out humor. But hey, There were some genuine laughs though, mainly from the character Constantino, who had the most witty humorous dialogue, to me at least.
My main gripes? It might be a bit too long at 2 hours, not all the humor lands, and it’s a bit predictable. But honestly, I don’t mind a familiar story as long as it’s done well.
Overall, with a solid cast, likable characters, and a great message about perseverance, Champions gets a very solid 8/10 from me
Alright, that’s my review! Thanks for tuning in. Happy trails, everyone!"
