Nine Virginia Schools Earn National Recognition for Inclusion Efforts

Schools awarded for their commitment to inclusive sports, leadership, and fostering positive school environments.

We are excited to announce that nine Virginia schools have been nationally recognized for their outstanding commitment to inclusion through the Special Olympics Unified Champion Schools® program. These schools have been awarded banner recognition for their dedication to creating environments where students with and without intellectual disabilities can come together through inclusive sports, leadership, and whole-school engagement.

The following schools in Virginia have earned this prestigious honor:

  • King William High School
  • Woodgrove High School
  • Yorktown High School
  • Stone Bridge High School
  • Annandale High School
  • Washington-Liberty High School
  • Broad Run High School
  • Liberty High School - Bedford
  • Thomas C. Boushall Middle School

These schools met 10 national standards for inclusion, advocacy, and respect, developed by Special Olympics and education leaders. Their programs focus on inclusive sports, leadership development, and whole-school activities that create a welcoming environment for all students. Through the Unified Champion Schools® model, students with and without disabilities participate together in Unified Sports®, build leadership skills, and engage in activities that promote respect and understanding. Supported by the U.S. Department of Education’s Office of Special Education Programs, this model has been shown to create inclusive school climates where all students feel they belong.

We congratulate these schools on their incredible achievements and look forward to seeing their continued success in fostering inclusion and breaking down barriers.
