The Law Enforcement Torch Run Carries the 'Flame of Hope' Throughout the Commonwealth

The Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics Virginia Unites Communities and Raises Over $83,000

The Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics Virginia brought officers from law enforcement agencies across the Commonwealth together, focusing on raising funds and awareness for Special Olympics Virginia. Participants fueled the Flame of Hope by running, walking, and biking across Virginia, leading up to the Final Mile at the University of Richmond, which marked the start of the 2024 Special Olympics Virginia Summer Games.

Spring Torch Run

This year’s Torch Run was a remarkable success, with almost 60 agencies participating and raising more than $83,000 for the over 21,000 Special Olympics Virginia athletes. This spring officers covered more than 2,000 miles, carrying the Flame of Hope through numerous communities and drawing attention to the cause.

Torch Run Final Leg

The Torch Run culminated in an inspiring final leg into the Opening Ceremony for the Special Olympics Virginia Summer Games. The 2,000-mile, spring Torch Run concluded at the University of Richmond on June 7th, where 119 runners from 20 law enforcement departments participated in the Final Mile. The event was highlighted by the lighting of the cauldron by Prince William County Police Chief Peter Newsham and Special Olympics Virginia athlete Rose Reeder, symbolizing the official start of the Summer Games.

Beyond Torch Run

The dedication of law enforcement extends beyond Torch Run. Throughout the Summer Games, many officers volunteered their time, cheering and presenting awards to athletes.

Law enforcement support continues year-round, with agencies engaging in many activities to benefit Special Olympics Virginia, such as the Plane Pull, Polar Plunge, Tip-A-Cop events, and volunteering at local practices or state games.

The Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics Virginia is a powerful demonstration of community spirit and collective effort. The journey of the Flame of Hope stands as a symbol of this abiding commitment, a testament to the power of unity and the enduring spirit of support for athletes across the state.
