Historically, individuals with intellectual disabilities (ID) have been excluded from healthy relationship education due to misconceptions about their interest and the fear that such education could lead to inappropriate behavior. Research shows that this exclusion increases the risk of victimization, unplanned pregnancies, and STIs.

To address this, Special Olympics Virginia, in collaboration with Mad Hatter Wellness and the Disability-inclusive Sexual Health Network(DSHN), has developed materials to educate coaches, volunteers, and athletes about healthy relationships.

Healthy Relationships for All

This program includes videos, activities, and discussions on the topics of healthy relationships, consent, compromise, body rights, and love. The sessions can be conducted with a small group, in a 1:1 setting, or as self-paced instruction. The training video and slide deck provides facilitators with background information, and overview of the program, as well as facilitation strategies. This program was created specifically for athletes to learn about safe and healthy relationships in their lives.

Safe & Healthy Boundaries Training

This training is for volunteers, coaches, and staff. It covers supporting athletes in healthy relationships, discussing boundaries and consent, and maintaining personal boundaries for safety. It also addresses responding to difficult situations, handling athlete disclosures, mandatory reporting, and tips for supporting athletes' bodily autonomy.
