As of August 1, 2024 the medical examination done by a licensed medical practitioner and signature are no longer a requirement as part of the Special Olympics Virginia Athlete Participation and Registration process. The new packet of forms for Special Olympics Virginia Athlete Registration and Participation packet consists of five (5) pages and is available on the website. Athletes must have a valid and complete registration packet on file with SOVA before beginning any participation, training, practices or games. Registration packets submitted without a doctor’s signature must be redone annually in order for an athlete to be eligible. Registration packets submitted with a physical and doctor’s signature will be accepted with a 3-year expiration until October 1, 2024 ideally to align with release of new SOI forms.

Athletes who attend SONA regional events such as National Invitational Tournaments, USA Games or World Games will still be required to complete all forms including the physician examination and signature for those events only. SOVA expects to receive a new Athlete Participation Packet from Special Olympics North America in September of 2024.
